Horrific Solo-Car Crash on Route 88 Led to Injuries [Tortilla Flat, AZ]

Tortilla Flat, AZ (October 12, 2025) — Two people suffered critical injuries after a horrific crash on Route 88 Wednesday evening.

According to authorities, the frightening incident happened just before 8 p.m. to the area near Milepost 219.

Reports say that a vehicle plunged off a cliff along State Route 88, several miles east of Tortilla Flat.

Emergency crews responded to the scene after reports that a car had gone over the edge, leaving multiple people trapped in a steep canyon.

Firefighters found one person about 40 feet down a slope, while the vehicle and two other victims were located roughly 350 feet below the cliff. A technical rescue team used ropes and a Stokes basket to pull the first victim to safety.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Ranger One helicopter assisted in rescuing and airlifting the remaining two victims to a nearby trauma center. Both were listed in critical condition.

The complex rescue effort lasted nearly four hours and involved multiple agencies, including Superstition Fire and Medical District, Mesa Fire Tactical Rescue Team, and Central Arizona Search and Rescue.
