TACOMA, WA (April 23, 2026) – Tuesday morning, a person died in a horrific speeding crash on 72nd Street E and Portland Avenue.

The incident happened at about 12:25 a.m. on 72nd Street East and Portland Avenue.

A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a power pole, according to Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Shelbie Boyd.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities said it is still unclear where the victims were positioned inside the vehicle.

Boyd described the crash as severe and noted there appeared to have been a fire at the scene.
