1 Dead in Houston Auto Accident on Interstate 10
HOUSTON, TX (February 12, 2026) – Early Tuesday morning, a man died in a horrific wrong-way crash on Interstate 10.
The incident happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Interstate 10.
More than four hours after the deadly crash, inbound lanes of I-10 remained closed as debris covered the freeway near the scene. All lanes reopened around 6:15 a.m. after investigators cleared the roadway.
According to Houston police, a driver was traveling the wrong way at a very high speed on the inbound I-10 when the vehicle crashed head-on into another car that was moving in the correct direction.
Police said a Kia was heading inbound when an Acura sports car approached in the same lanes while driving the wrong way. Investigators are also examining a report of a wrong-way driver on Highway 59 near Daikin Park and whether it may be connected.
While authorities have not confirmed it was the same vehicle, they say the timing and location could explain how the driver ended up going the wrong direction on I-10.
“That’s not that far from here. And if you take 59, it dumps out potentially onto I-10. So, you’d have to be driving the wrong way on the ramp to I-10 as well. So that may be what happened. I don’t know if it’s the same vehicle, but it could be because the timing matches up,” HPD Sgt. Rose said.
Police said the Acura caught fire after the impact. The male driver of the sports car died at the scene.
The woman driving the Kia was found unconscious and taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Investigators are asking anyone who believes a loved one may have been involved to contact Houston police. Authorities have not yet determined if impairment played a role and say the investigation is ongoing.
Drivers on Houston’s east side should expect significant delays.
Sweet Lawyers extends our condolences to the family and community of the victim.
