LAYTONVILLE, CA (December 11, 2025) – Monday afternoon, a startling traffic crash on Area 101 near Mile Marker 79.3 led to injuries.

The incident happened just before 4:57 p.m. on Area 101 near Mile Marker 79.3.

A tan sedan went off the roadway and down an embankment just north of Area 101, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log. The vehicle wasn’t visible from the road, and witnesses told dispatchers the driver had been swerving before the crash.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 4:58 p.m. Responders requested extrication to reach the occupants, and scanner traffic indicated an air ambulance was ordered. The CHP log noted the sedan came to rest about 15 yards down a steep embankment near mile marker 80.1. A bystander reported the driver was conscious with moderate injuries, though extrication was still needed.

A tow request was placed for a Toyota Corolla with major front-left damage, and McCaffery’s Tow was notified. Crews continued working to reach the driver and remove the car from the hillside.

At 6:30 p.m., the CHP classified the crash as a major-injury collision. McCaffery’s Tow has recovered the vehicle, and the scene has been cleared.
