Midland, TX (June 2, 2025) — Midland police arrested 36-year-old Roberto Pando III in connection with a crash that claimed the life of 18-year-old James Baker early Monday morning.

According to investigators, officers responded around 1:24 a.m. to a reported disturbance involving weapons and two vehicles near Loop 250 and Fairgrounds Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a 2009 Ford F-150 and found its driver, 18-year-old James Baker of Midland, deceased at the scene.

Four passengers who were riding in the pickup sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Authorities reported that their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police later located Pando, who allegedly confessed to his involvement in the incident. Officers arrested him and booked him into the Midland County Detention Center on one count of murder. Investigators said additional charges may be filed as the case develops.
