Man Surrenders Following Fatal Hit-and-Run in North Spokane

Spokane, WA (June 25, 2025) — 63-year-old James Bernhardt turned himself in to authorities after police identified him as the suspected driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash on Newport Highway that claimed a pedestrian’s life in north Spokane.

The collision happened around 4:15 a.m. on June 20 near the 9200 block of North Newport Highway. Emergency dispatchers received reports of a person lying in the roadway and a vehicle leaving the scene shortly after the crash.

Responding officers found the pedestrian dead at the scene. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses and identified a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident.

After police released information about the vehicle and sought public assistance, James G. Bernhardt contacted officers and surrendered at the Public Safety Building on Wednesday morning. Authorities booked him into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of hit-and-run involving a fatality.

According to court documents, Bernhardt told investigators he initially believed he had struck debris in the roadway. After realizing a person had been involved, he left the scene. Records indicate he later contacted police and surrendered.

A Spokane County commissioner later released Bernhardt on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to be arraigned on June 30.

The investigation remains ongoing.
