Police Investigate Crash on Interstate 70 involving Lawrence Police Car

Kansas City, MO (June 19, 2026)— A 20-year-old Jeep Wrangler driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in a crash on Interstate 70 late Thursday night.

The crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. near mile marker 202 at the West Lawrence interchange, which leads toward the University of Kansas campus.

Lawrence police officers had responded to the area to direct traffic off I-70 after a semi-truck crash blocked traffic farther up the road near mile marker 198.

Officers wore reflective vests and stood outside their patrol vehicles, which had flashing lights activated as they worked to detour motorists. Police said the officers also used flashlights and hand signals to direct traffic.

According to police, one officer was gathering supplies from the trunk of her patrol car with her back turned to traffic when the Jeep headed toward her. A second officer yelled for her to move and ran for cover, jumping over a concrete median barrier.

The Jeep struck a patrol car, causing it to spin and stop just before hitting a third officer. The Jeep then hit the concrete barrier and came to rest about 10 feet from the initial impact.

Police said the Jeep driver was able to speak with officers at the scene after the crash. Both the Jeep and the patrol car sustained significant damage and were towed away.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Police said they did not know whether impairment played a role.
