Jesus Verduzco Dies in 2-Car Crash on Interstate 5 [San Diego, CA]

San Diego, CA (May 31, 2025) — A deadly two-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 5 near downtown San Diego claimed the lives of 62-year-old Jesus Verduzco of Bonita and another driver early Friday morning, authorities said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. south of Laurel Street. A 56-year-old El Cajon man driving a Dodge Durango collided with a white Honda CR-V driven by Verduzco. The impact sparked a fire that engulfed both vehicles.

Emergency responders pronounced the Dodge driver dead at the scene. Verduzco was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators are still working to determine which vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction at the time of the crash. Authorities have also ordered toxicology testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

The crash prompted the closure of several southbound lanes for several hours before traffic resumed shortly after 6:30 a.m.
