Joseph Hampton Dead in Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 139 [Mesa County, CO]

Mesa County, CO (August 28, 2026) – 35-year-old Joseph Hampton was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 139 early Monday.

It was past 2 a.m. when the deadly traffic crash happened south of Loma, near the Utah border.

Police said a light-colored SUV struck Hampton while he was seated in the middle of the northbound lane of the freeway. The vehicle dragged him roughly 130 feet and then fled the scene.

Immediately, rescuers rushed to the scene and transported the victim to a hospital where he was declared deceased. 

Moreover, the authorities confirmed Tuesday they arrested the driver Aaron Mackinnon, 48, and a passenger, Rusty Vogt, 44, who were related to the fatal crash in Vernal, Utah.

Troopers charged Mackinnon with failure to remain at the scene to give information or aid after an accident involving death, which is a felony, while Vogt is facing a felony charge of accessory.
