Joseph Pate Arrested in Deadly DUI Crash on Nacimiento Lake Drive [San Luis Obispo County, CA]

San Luis Obispo County, CA (May 12, 2025) — A 48-year-old Paso Robles man died and Joseph Pate suffered major injuries after a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in northern San Luis Obispo County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 7:19 p.m. on Nacimiento Lake Drive near Frazier Road. Investigators reported that 44-year-old Joseph Mitchell Pate of Paso Robles was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro westbound when the vehicle veered off the roadway for unknown reasons.

CHP said Pate attempted to correct the vehicle but lost control, causing the Camaro to cross both lanes before slamming into a tree south of the road.

A 48-year-old Paso Robles man riding in the back seat died at the scene. Officials have not released his identity pending notification of family members.

Pate suffered major injuries in the collision and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Emergency crews transported him to Adventist Health Sierra Vista in San Luis Obispo for treatment.

Another passenger, 41-year-old Mack Garcia of Paso Robles, sustained minor injuries.
