Newberry Springs, CA (July 13, 2026) — Juanita Pelley, a 63-year-old Iowa woman, died following a traffic collision Saturday evening near the Desert Oasis Rest Area along eastbound Interstate 40 in Newberry Springs.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash at approximately 6:28 p.m. on July 11, 2026, near Exit 28.

Authorities identified the victim as Pelley of Sioux City, Iowa. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

The incident was initially reported around 5:35 p.m. CHP later coordinated with CAL FIRE, while deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the scene. Animal control responded to retrieve one dog and two cats that were found in cages following the crash.
