Police Chase in Garland and Mesquite Injures Cyclist and Driver; Suspect Arrested
Mesquite, TX (May 25, 2025) – Police arrested 33-year-old Justin Bernard Johnson after a high-speed pursuit crash that injured a cyclist and a driver on Saturday morning.
Garland officers initially responded to a domestic violence report around 9 a.m. at an apartment complex on Bay Island Drive. Before they arrived, Johnson fled the scene in a vehicle.
Officers located him on Interstate 30, where he allegedly discarded drugs and refused to stop, leading police on a chase into Mesquite.
During the pursuit, Johnson struck a cyclist on the service road. The cyclist landed on the suspect’s vehicle and later fell off before Johnson crashed into two cars at an intersection. Johnson then attempted to flee on foot, but officers apprehended him shortly after.
Emergency responders transported the cyclist and one of the drivers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities booked Johnson into the Garland Detention Center on multiple felony charges, including evading arrest causing serious bodily injury, continuous family violence assault, tampering with evidence, and a parole violation warrant from Austin.
Officials continue to investigate the incident.

Let’s Avoid Traffic Accidents
Avoiding auto accidents involves paying attention and practicing safe driving methods. And as always, you should follow the speed and traffic laws — and don’t text (or use your phone in any way) behind the wheel. Keep a safe trailing distance to be able to stop, if necessary. Do not drink and drive and never get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are tired. Watch your mirrors and use your turn signals, and check your blind spots, before changing lanes or making a turn. Drive calmly and patiently, especially in heavy traffic or bad weather. When you drive responsibly and remain alert, you help prevent accidents and keep everyone on the road safe.
If you witness a violent or dangerous situation, report it immediately. Never attempt to intervene — let law enforcement handle it.
