Driver Charged After Pedestrian Hit in Marshall Crosswalk

Marshall, TX (August 13, 2026) — Kelsey Chalfant, a Sedalia woman, faces multiple charges after authorities accused her of driving under the influence and striking a pedestrian in a Marshall crosswalk Monday morning.

Police responded around 7:50 a.m. to the area of Conway and Morrow streets, where a white Toyota Camry traveling west on Morrow Street struck a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.

Authorities identified the driver as 27-year-old Kelsey Chalfant. Court records show prosecutors charged her with second-degree assault, DWI, and careless and imprudent driving.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital for treatment.

Officers conducted field sobriety tests after noticing signs of impairment. Although a preliminary breath test registered 0.000% blood alcohol content, investigators allege Chalfant had consumed alcohol and used marijuana before the crash.

Authorities also reportedly found CBD pills in her vehicle and allege that a combination of substances contributed to her impairment.

Chalfant appeared at an initial arraignment by video and has another court hearing scheduled for Aug. 19.

Traffic collisions can happen at any time, but their impact lasts a lifetime. Stay alert, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Always wear your seatbelt, obey speed limits, and be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists. Keep a safe distance between vehicles and adjust your speed for road conditions.

Drivers must stay alert and never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, marijuana, or other substances. Pedestrians in marked crosswalks also depend on drivers to remain attentive and yield when required.
