Kevin Daniel Stevens Dies in Tragic Pedestrian Crash on Airport Drive [Bakersfield, CA]

Pedestrian Killed After Vehicle Fleeing Bakersfield Police Pursuit Crashes

Bakersfield, CA (September 9, 2026) — 22-year-old Kevin Daniel Stevens died early Saturday after a vehicle involved in a police pursuit struck him while attempting to avoid a spike strip.

Bakersfield police officers from the Special Enforcement Unit were searching for 21-year-old Isaiah Andrade, who had an active arrest warrant involving firearm possession and gang-related charges. Officers located Andrade near Clover Mountain Court and Pine Meadow Drive in Oildale around 1:30 a.m. on September 5.

According to police, Andrade entered a vehicle driven by 20-year-old Gabriel Lopez, who then sped away. Officers pursued the vehicle as it traveled south on Airport Drive.

Police deployed spike strips near Airport Drive and Olive Drive. Investigators said Lopez tried to avoid the strips, lost control, and struck a pedestrian on the west sidewalk.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Kevin Daniel Stevens, 22, of Bakersfield. He died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Lopez and Andrade fled the vehicle on foot, but officers quickly arrested them. Both men went to a hospital for medical clearance before facing potential charges related to the pursuit, firearms, gang activity, and Andrade’s outstanding warrant.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, while Bakersfield police continue a separate criminal investigation. Authorities said additional charges related to the crash and Stevens’ death could follow after the investigation.

Finding Support and Accountability After a Sudden Loss

Losing someone you love in an unexpected accident can turn your world upside down. Along with the deep emotional pain, families are often faced with practical and financial concerns—medical bills, funeral arrangements, and the sudden loss of emotional and financial support. These challenges can feel overwhelming when you’re already grieving.

During times like these, it’s important to know that help is available. A wrongful death claim may provide a path toward accountability and financial stability, helping families protect their future while honoring their loved one’s memory.

Through a wrongful death claim, families may be able to seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical care related to the final injuries
  • Lost income and future financial support
  • Emotional pain and loss of companionship

This process isn’t just about financial recovery—it’s about accountability. When negligence, reckless behavior, or impaired driving contributes to a fatal accident, holding the responsible party accountable can help bring justice and reduce the risk of similar tragedies happening to others.

While nothing can ever replace the life that was lost, pursuing justice can offer families a sense of closure and peace. It’s one meaningful way to honor a loved one’s life and legacy.
