Three-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 50 Leaves One Dead and One Injured

GUNNISON COUNTY, CO (September 28, 2026)— A 37-year-old Montrose man died Sunday evening in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 50 near Gunnison, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Troopers responded to the collision at approximately 5:26 p.m. Sept. 27 near mile marker 126.5, west of Gunnison.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2008 Ford Escape traveled westbound on Highway 50 ahead of a BMW motorcycle before crossing into the eastbound lane.

The Escape sideswiped an eastbound 2026 Ford F-350 that was towing a trailer.

The impact caused the Escape to spin and come to rest in the westbound lanes. The collision also forced the Ford F-350 and its trailer off the right side of the highway.

The motorcycle then struck debris from the initial collision. The impact caused the motorcycle rider to leave the roadway and come to rest along the right side of the westbound lane.

The Ford Escape driver, a 37-year-old Montrose man, died at the scene.

Authorities have not released his identity because the Gunnison County Coroner’s Office is still working to notify his next of kin.

The 58-year-old driver of the Ford F-350 and his 53-year-old female passenger escaped the crash without reported injuries.

The 44-year-old motorcycle rider suffered minor injuries and went to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities closed Highway 50 for approximately five hours while emergency crews investigated the collision and cleared the roadway.

Officials reopened the highway shortly after 10:29 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash. Authorities have not determined the cause of the collision.

Sweet Lawyers extends our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.

Lost a Loved One or Injured in a Gunnison County Crash? Sweet Lawyers Can Help You Understand Your Legal Options

A fatal multi-vehicle collision can leave families facing profound grief while also dealing with difficult practical and financial concerns.

When a loved one dies unexpectedly in a roadway crash, surviving family members may need time and support to process what happened while investigators work to determine how the collision occurred.

At Sweet Lawyers, we understand that no legal process can undo the loss of a family member. Our goal is to provide compassionate support and help families understand the resources and legal options that may be available following a fatal crash.

The circumstances surrounding a three-vehicle collision can involve multiple vehicles, drivers, witnesses, physical evidence, and insurance policies.

Investigators may examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, debris patterns, photographs, witness statements, available video footage, and other evidence when determining what happened.

In crashes involving a commercial or heavy-duty pickup towing a trailer, investigators may also consider additional vehicle and insurance information as appropriate.

Families who lose someone in a fatal collision may have questions about the investigation, available documentation, insurance claims, and potential avenues for seeking compensation.

Sweet Lawyers can help explain these issues in clear, understandable terms while treating each family with compassion and respect.

For people who survive serious crashes, even seemingly minor injuries can sometimes require medical evaluation, follow-up treatment, time away from work, or other unexpected expenses.

Motorcycle riders may face greater concerns because motorcycles provide significantly less physical protection than passenger vehicles in a collision. Keeping medical records and documenting the recovery process can be important after an accident.

If you or someone you love has been affected by a crash in Gunnison County or elsewhere in Colorado, Sweet Lawyers is available to discuss your circumstances and explain what steps may be available.
