Wrong-Way Crash in Lubbock Claims Three Lives, Leaves Four Others Seriously Injured

Lubbock, TX (July 26, 2026)Lakecha Collins was among three people, including a 2-year-old child, who died in a devastating wrong-way crash Thursday evening on Interstate 27 in Lubbock, Texas. Four others, including a police officer, suffered injuries during the incident.

According to investigators, officers received reports of a wrong-way driver near 19th Street and Interstate 27 around 7:23 p.m. Before they could intercept the vehicle, it collided with a northbound passenger car and then continued in the wrong direction before crashing head-on into a pickup truck.

Authorities identified the wrong-way driver as 29-year-old Oscar Hernandez Sotelo Jr. He and a 2-year-old child riding in his vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The child’s 3-year-old sibling survived after a responding officer rescued them from the burning vehicle, suffering minor injuries during the rescue. The child was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the passenger car, 24-year-old Jairon Foster, sustained serious injuries. His passenger, 60-year-old Lakecha Collins, died at the scene.

The occupants of the pickup truck, 28-year-old Alexis Wallace and her 19-year-old passenger, Aaliyah Wallace, also suffered serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Investigators continue to examine the crash and believe alcohol impairment and excessive speed may have contributed to the collision.
