Luis Deras Killed in Horrific Crash Near Thornton Avenue [Newark, CA]

Newark, CA (September 28, 2025) — 33-year-old Anthony Monchez of Hayward and 31-year-old Luis Deras of Union City lost their lives Thursday evening in a single-vehicle crash near Thornton Avenue and Hickory Street.

Emergency crews arrived around 5:28 p.m. and found that one occupant had been ejected from the vehicle. Despite life-saving efforts, both victims died at the scene.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Anthony Andres Reynoza Monchez and the passenger as Luis Alberto Deras.

This incident marks Newark’s first fatal crash of 2025. The cause remains under investigation.
