2 People Injured After Head-On Crash on State Route 165 in Merced County

Merced County, CA (December 6, 2024) – Two people sustained serious injuries in a head-on crash on State Route 165.

Authorities are investigating a head-on collision that caused major injuries early Saturday morning, Nov. 30, on State Route 165 south of Williams Avenue. 

The crash occurred around 5:40 a.m. during foggy conditions with visibility reduced to about 50 feet.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an 18-year-old Modesto man driving a 2000 Honda Accord southbound on State Route 165 attempted to pass another vehicle. 

During the maneuver, the Honda sideswiped a 2017 Dodge Ram and then collided head-on with a 2024 GMC Sierra before overturning.

The driver of the Honda suffered major injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital. 

The GMC driver, a 58-year-old Los Banos man, and his 39-year-old male passenger were taken to Doctors Medical Center with moderate injuries.

CHP officials stated that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have contributed to the crash, though foggy conditions likely played a role. 

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
