Man Killed in Brutal Pedestrian Crash on Highway 1

1 Dead in Monterey County Pedestrian Accident on Highway 1 near Palo Colorado

MONTEREY, CA (August 18, 2026) – Saturday night, a 47-year-old Big Sur man died in a brutal pedestrian crash on Highway 1 near Palo Colorado.

The incident happened at around 8:23 p.m. on Highway 1 near Palo Colorado.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a Dodge coupe on Highway 1.

Investigators said a 20-year-old Fresno man was driving northbound when the 47-year-old pedestrian, Brian Roberts of Big Sur, was walking west across the highway. The Dodge struck Roberts, who was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.

CHP said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash.

Authorities reminded drivers and pedestrians to take extra precautions due to increased traffic in the area from Car Week and the Timber Fire.

The crash remains under investigation.
