Two Officers Injured After Fatal Crash on Hyde Street and Trader Joe’s in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 12, 2026) — A man died, and two San Francisco police officers suffered injuries in a crash on Hyde Street Friday morning after a vehicle struck all three during a theft-related police response near a Trader Joe’s in Nob Hill.
Police said officers responded at about 7:40 a.m. to the Trader Joe’s at California and Hyde streets after receiving a report of a theft. Public Information Officer Robert Rueca described the scene as chaotic and said investigators had not yet confirmed what, if anything, was taken from the store.
According to police, the adult male suspect did not comply with officers and ran from the store on foot. Officers pursued him into the street, where they tackled him. Police union President Louis Wong described the encounter as a violent struggle.
As the struggle unfolded in the roadway, a dark gray Lexus turned the corner and struck the man and both officers. Authorities said the driver appeared unrelated to the Trader Joe’s incident and has cooperated with investigators.
Emergency crews transported all three people to a hospital. The man was later pronounced dead. Both officers suffered leg injuries and are expected to recover.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased man.
Police were also in the area earlier that morning investigating a Tesla fire in the Trader Joe’s parking lot. Fire officials said crews extinguished the flames in under 10 minutes and later determined the fire was accidental.
Investigators remained at the scene collecting evidence, and a nearby cable car was temporarily blocked due to the ongoing investigation.
Sweet Lawyers extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.
