1 Dead in Homeland Pedestrian Accident on Highway 74 and Melba Avenue

HOMELAND, CA (October 14, 2025) – Friday, a 32-year-old man died in a brutal pedestrian crash on Highway 74 and Melba Avenue.

The incident happened just after midnight on eastbound Highway 74, just east of Melba Avenue.

Officer Mike Lassig said the pedestrian had been walking along the north shoulder of the four-lane corridor when he turned and began crossing the westbound lanes, initially avoiding traffic.

According to Lassig, the man then continued into the eastbound lanes and stepped directly into the path of a 2003 Kia Sorrento traveling about 45 mph.
“The front of the Kia crashed into the man,” Lassig said. “He came to rest on the ground, and the driver of the Kia came to a stop.”

The 18-year-old Hemet man driving the Kia was not injured.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within minutes and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Officers questioned the driver but did not arrest him.

The nearest marked crosswalk is nearly a mile west at Leon Road.
