1 Dead in Fresno County Auto Accident on Highway 99 and Atwater Boulevard

FRESNO COUNTY, CA (May 8, 2025) – Tuesday night, a man died in a horrific big rig crash on Highway 99 and Atwater Boulevard.

The incident involving a pickup truck and a bed camper happened at about 10:20 p.m. on northbound Highway 99, south of Atwater Boulevard.

When responding officers arrived, they located a man deceased in the roadway and a woman with major injuries. Then, they airlifted the woman to a nearby hospital, and she is now in stable condition.

Meanwhile, reports said that a 27-year-old man from Riverside was driving a 1979 Chevrolet Silverado with a camper attached on northbound Highway 99, just north of Buhach Road.

For unknown reasons, the camper detached and stopped in the No. 2 lane. The driver then parked his truck in the same lane, south of Atwater Boulevard.

Moreover, a 2023 Kenworth big rig driving in the same lane failed to see the camper and the man in time. The driver tried to swerve but crashed into both the camper and the man, who appeared to be trying to remove it from the roadway.

CHP said that it’s still unclear where the woman was during the crash, as she was also found on the road.

Meanwhile, the big rig driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Also, the authorities urged anyone with information to contact Officer Nicholas Thornton at 209-356-6600.
