Chelan County, WA (January 1, 2025) On Sunday, 51-year-old Marife Benson of Eatonville and 81-year-old John O’Brien of Hayden were hurt in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 97.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the solo-car crash happened just before midnight, roughly five miles from The Big Y.

Reports say that elderly man from Idaho and one other individual sustained injuries in a single-vehicle crash late Sunday in Chelan County.

Authorities say that O’Brien was driving a pickup truck southbound on U.S. Highway 97, O’Brien lost control of the vehicle, struck a guardrail, and caused the truck to overturn.

O’Brien and a passenger, Marife N. Benson, sustained injuries in the crash.

Emergency responders transported O’Brien to Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth, while Benson received treatment at the scene. A second passenger in the vehicle avoided injury.

Investigators determined that O’Brien was driving too fast for road conditions at the time of the crash. However, the Washington State Patrol confirmed that impairment did not contribute to the accident, and no information was provided about potential citations or charges.
