Mary Haapala Dies After Car Crashes in Senior Care Facility in Gilbert

Gilbert, AZ (January 11, 2025) – A car crashed into a senior care facility in Gilbert on Friday night, killing an 88-year-old Mary Haapala. 

Gilbert police report that the collision occurred just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Lindsay and Guadalupe roads.

Officers responding to the scene discovered the car had struck the American Orchards Senior Community building. 

Inside the building, they found an 88-year-old woman, later identified as Mary Haapala, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities apprehended the driver, 33-year-old Joshua Degolier, after he reportedly fled the scene. He now faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder. 

Investigators suspect impairment played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
