Matthew Hellums, 38, Dies in Crash on 91 Freeway [Carson, CA]

Los Angeles County, CA (January 20, 2026) — Early Monday morning, a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 91 Freeway in Carson left Matthew Hellums, 38, dead and forced the closure of several westbound lanes.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 12:38 a.m. on the westbound Gardena (91) Freeway just west of Central Avenue.

Reports say that a minivan and a passenger vehicle collided and came to rest blocking the HOV lane.

First responders pronounced one person, later identified as Matthew Hellums, dead at the scene. At least one other individual suffered injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, closing the westbound HOV lane along with lanes one through three. Crews reopened all affected lanes at approximately 4:18 a.m. following the investigation and cleanup.
