Matthew Shiflett Injured in 2-Car Collision on US 97 [Riverside, CA]

Two Drivers Hurt After SUV Crosses Center Line on U.S. 97 Near Riverside

Riverside, CA (May 6, 2025) — 48-year-old Matthew Shiflett from Okanogan and 41-year-old John McKellips from Federal Way sustained injuries Friday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 97 just north of Riverside in Okanogan County.

The Washington State Patrol reported that the collision occurred shortly after 4 p.m. when McKellips, driving an SUV, veered across the center line and struck a trailer being towed by a pickup truck. The pickup was driven by Shiflett.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and treated both drivers for injuries. Authorities airlifted the SUV driver to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, while responders treated the pickup driver at the scene.

The crash caused significant traffic delays along the highway for several hours. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the collision, including whether impairment played a role.

High-speed crashes can happen in the blink of an eye—but the truth is, many are preventable. A few smart choices behind the wheel can make all the difference. Put your phone down, don’t drive after drinking, and always follow speed limits. Buckle up, give yourself space between cars, and stay alert to what’s happening around you. These simple steps can save lives—yours, your passengers’, and others on the road.

We all play a role in keeping our communities safe. Whether it’s avoiding distractions or keeping a safe following distance, quick decisions and awareness can prevent chain-reaction crashes and protect everyone on the road.

Crashes involving vehicles crossing the center line often result in serious injuries. Drivers should remain alert, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Staying focused and maintaining proper lane control can help prevent devastating collisions.
