26-Year-Old Man Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 88; Woman Arrested for DUI

San Joaquin County, CA (June 16, 2025) — On Friday night, a 26-year-old man died in a head-on collision on Highway 88, leading to the arrest of Mercedes Vasquez.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at about 8:28 p.m. near Tokay Colony Road in San Joaquin County when a westbound Honda crossed over the double yellow lines and collided with an eastbound Nissan.

The Nissan driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Emergency crews from the Waterloo Morada Fire District responded to the crash and extricated occupants from both overturned vehicles. Authorities transported the Honda driver, identified as Mercedes Marie Vasquez, along with two passengers, to a hospital with moderate to major injuries.

After receiving medical treatment, Vasquez was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. She was held on $140,000 bail and scheduled to appear in court on June 16.
