Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 Involving 3 Semis Snarls I-5 Traffic in Olympia

OLYMPIA, WA (December 16, 2025) — A serious early-morning crash on Highway 101 involving three semi-trucks and one passenger vehicle caused major traffic disruption Monday on Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

WSDOT reported the collision just after 5:00 a.m., initially closing all lanes of northbound I-5 near Deschutes Parkway.

Southbound traffic was also impacted due to a concrete barrier being displaced into the left lane. Authorities confirmed that traffic was being diverted to Deschutes Parkway while emergency crews responded.

By 9:00 a.m., most lanes had reopened, but one northbound lane remained closed, and traffic continued to be backed up for miles, impacting the morning commute across Olympia and surrounding areas.

WSP Trooper Kameron Watts described the crash as a “3 semi/1 car-barrier collision”, noting that one of the semi-trucks had jackknifed, complicating efforts to remove it and restore normal traffic flow.

Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported, and no fatalities have been confirmed.

Motorists were urged to consider alternative routes, including exiting at Trosper Road and reentering I-5 northbound via Capitol Boulevard or 14th Avenue, to bypass the congestion.
