Plano DWI Crash Leaves Single Mother Critically Injured
Plano, TX (August 13, 2026) — Myrna Mellafe, a North Texas mother, suffered critical injuries after a suspected drunk driver rear-ended her vehicle in Plano just before the start of the school year.
The crash happened near State Highway 121 and Independence Parkway. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 21-year-old Xander Jaymes Smith struck the back of Mellafe’s vehicle, causing it to roll over and eject her through the sunroof.
First responders found Mellafe roughly 40 feet from her vehicle. She suffered a brain bleed, fractured pelvis and shoulder, and multiple internal injuries. Doctors transported her to Medical City McKinney for treatment.
Police arrested Smith at the scene and charged him with intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury.
Mellafe’s 17-year-old daughter missed the beginning of her senior year to remain at her mother’s bedside. The family later reported that Mellafe had regained consciousness, opened her eyes, and began communicating.
The family is seeking financial assistance to help cover Mellafe’s medical and legal expenses.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a person is injured in a motor vehicle crash every two minutes in Texas. In 2021 alone, more than 239,000 people were hurt in traffic accidents statewide — a sobering reminder that road safety is truly a matter of life and death.
Sadly, reckless and distracted driving continues to claim lives every day. Every few hours, another fatal crash happens somewhere in Texas. That’s why it’s so important to drive defensively, stay alert, follow the speed limit, and keep an eye out for others on the road. Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility.
Never drive after drinking. A moment of impaired driving can cause life-changing injuries for innocent people and their families. If you plan to drink, arrange a sober ride home.
