Passenger Injured in Rollover Crash on I-5 Near Orland

Orland, CA (August 21, 2026) — 18-year-old Norah Starr Smith suffered minor injuries after a rollover crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 5 near Orland, California.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 6 a.m. on southbound I-5 north of County Road 27. Investigators identified Ava Halo Mace, 18, as the driver and Smith as the passenger.

According to CHP, Mace looked down at a navigation app on her cellphone while driving. When she looked back at the roadway, she had drifted toward another vehicle and swerved to avoid a collision. Both occupants wore seat belts. Smith suffered minor injuries and went to Enloe Health in Chico for evaluation.

CHP determined that drugs and alcohol did not contribute to the crash. Officer Z. Cornell continues to investigate the cause.
