Officer Injured after Alarming Vehicle Crash on US 285

Injuries Reported in Lincoln County Auto Accident on US 285 near Milepost 179

LINCOLN COUNTY, NM (May 13, 2026) – Early Sunday morning, an officer sustained injuries after an alarming vehicle crash on US 285 near Milepost 179.

Multiple agencies, including the New Mexico State Police, responded overnight Saturday to US 285 near milepost 179, north of Roswell and Ramon, after a tanker truck carrying hazardous material overturned. Officials with the Berrendo Volunteer Fire Department said the tanker was carrying sodium sulfide.

While crews worked to control the rollover scene, an NMSP officer parked his patrol vehicle in the northbound lane around 12:10 a.m. Sunday to block traffic because the tanker was obstructing both lanes.

Authorities said the officer, who was outside the patrol unit at the time, saw an approaching vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and moved out of the way moments before it crashed into the police vehicle, causing extensive damage.

The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. Fire officials said the driver who struck the patrol unit refused medical treatment. No other injuries were reported.

NMSP said the roadway reopened on Sunday.
