Police Investigate Hit-And-Run Crash on Interstate 5 in Tacoma

TACOMA, WA (August 29, 2026)— One person suffered minor injuries Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 near South 84th Street, authorities said.

The Washington Department of Transportation reported the collision at approximately 1:23 p.m.

According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts, two vehicles collided on the southbound side of I-5.

Following the crash, a man reportedly left the scene on foot. Authorities said he ran across the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 toward the Hosmer area.

Washington State Patrol units searched for the man but had not located him at the time of the latest report. Troopers remained at the crash scene interviewing witnesses as part of their investigation.

Authorities confirmed that one person suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Officials did not release additional details about the injured person’s condition or whether hospitalization was required.

Police have not provided further information about the man who fled, including his identity or his alleged role in the collision.

All affected lanes of Interstate 5 have since reopened.

The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the reported departure from the scene.

Compassionate Support After a Crash Involving a Driver Who Leaves the Scene

A traffic collision can become even more stressful when someone involved leaves before authorities complete their investigation.

Our thoughts are with the person who suffered injuries in this Interstate 5 crash and with everyone affected by the incident.

Even injuries initially described as minor can create unexpected difficulties. Some crash victims experience pain, stiffness, headaches, or other symptoms that become more noticeable after the immediate shock of a collision subsides.

Medical evaluations, follow-up appointments, missed work, vehicle repairs, and insurance communications can all add to the disruption caused by an accident.

Crashes in which someone reportedly leaves the scene may also require additional investigative work. Authorities may interview witnesses, review nearby surveillance or traffic-camera footage, examine vehicle debris and damage, and gather other evidence to determine what happened and identify everyone involved.

In this case, Washington State Patrol said a man ran across the northbound lanes of I-5 toward Hosmer after the collision. Troopers had not located him at the time of the latest report, and investigators were continuing to speak with witnesses.
