Driver Arrested After DUI Hit-And-Run Crash on Highway 101 in Arcata

ARCATA, CA (May 27, 2026)— A passenger suffered major injuries early Sunday morning after a rollover crash on Highway 101 at the Highway 299 interchange.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was first reported around 2:30 a.m. A red vehicle rolled over and came to rest on the right shoulder.

CHP said the driver fled the scene after the crash. Officers later located the driver and arrested them on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run. CHP Officer Esselman said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision.

Arcata Fire District crews responded to the scene and found a passenger trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle before removing the roof to extricate the patient.

Crews also cut and removed damaged sections of guardrail from the roadway. Authorities said the crash damaged about 30 feet of guardrail.

One occupant was treated at St. Joseph Hospital for a major scalp laceration and was reported in stable condition. CHP logs did not include the condition of the other occupant.

The roadway was fully reopened around 5:45 a.m. Authorities upgraded the incident to a major injury traffic collision around 7:11 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
