Everett, WA (September 25, 2025) — 63-year-old Paul Veland of Everett lost his life early Wednesday after a box truck hit him on southbound Interstate 5 near milepost 189.

The Washington State Patrol reported that around 3:30 a.m., Veland had stopped and dismounted his 2020 Vespa scooter on the left shoulder. While he was in lane 3, a 2007 Isuzu NQR traveling southbound struck him.

Emergency responders pronounced Veland dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the crash.

The collision caused major traffic backups, with southbound lanes partially closed until about 7 a.m. Traffic delays reportedly reached as far north as U.S. 2.
