Pearl Chavez Killed in Highway 1 Head-On Collision [Monterey County, CA]

Monterey County, CA (January 14, 2025) — A head-on collision along Highway 1 in Monterey County claimed the life of 22-year-old Pearl Chavez of Marina Monday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just north of Highway 183 outside Castroville around 6:16 a.m.

Investigators said a gray Acura traveling southbound and a red Volkswagen heading northbound collided for reasons that remain under investigation.

The impact left the Acura blocking the southbound lanes, while the Volkswagen came to rest on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Emergency crews transported both drivers to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities later confirmed that the Volkswagen’s driver, Chavez, died from her injuries.

Officials have not determined whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. Crews reopened the roadway shortly after 8:15 a.m. as the investigation continued.
