Pedestrian Injured After Vehicle Collision on SR-161 in South Hill

Pierce County, WA (August 3, 2026) — On Sunday morning, a pedestrian sustained injuries after a frightening crash on State Route 161 in the South Hill area of East Pierce County.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. on southbound SR-161, just north of 176th Street.

Investigators said a 31-year-old Spanaway man was turning right from the Fred Meyer parking lot onto the highway when he hit a 23-year-old Graham man who was crossing the roadway.

Emergency responders treated the pedestrian for injuries. Authorities confirmed the crash was not fatal and said drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors. The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Let’s Avoid Traffic Accidents

Avoiding auto accidents involves paying attention and practicing safe driving methods. And as always, you should follow the speed and traffic laws, and don’t text (or use your phone in any way) behind the wheel.

Keep a safe trailing distance to be able to stop, if necessary.

Do not drink and drive, and never get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are tired.

Watch your mirrors, use your turn signals, and check your blind spots before changing lanes or making a turn. Drive calmly and patiently, especially in heavy traffic or bad weather.

When you drive responsibly and remain alert, you help prevent accidents and keep everyone on the road safe.

Drivers should remain alert when entering roadways and always yield to pedestrians at crossings. Pedestrians can also improve their safety by staying visible and remaining aware of nearby traffic. Exercising caution can help prevent serious collisions and save lives.

Life After a Traffic Accident: What You Should Know

A traffic accident doesn’t truly end when the vehicles are removed from the scene. For many victims, the real impact begins afterward. Physical injuries, emotional distress, and financial burdens can linger long after the crash, making recovery challenging and overwhelming.

Car accident injuries range from minor cuts and bruises to serious conditions like broken bones, spinal injuries, or traumatic brain injuries. Even injuries that seem small at first can develop into long-term health issues. Beyond the physical pain, many people experience anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, and post-traumatic stress. At the same time, medical bills pile up and missed work leads to lost income, creating additional financial strain.

If someone else’s negligence caused your accident, you may have the right to pursue compensation. This can include coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, pain and suffering, and future care needs. Understanding your rights is crucial to protecting your future.
