Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Interstate 35 in Austin

Austin, TX (April 16, 2026) – First responders responded Thursday morning to a fatal crash on Interstate 35 involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

According to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on the southbound side of I-35 near Grand Avenue Parkway. 

Authorities initially shut down all lanes in the area, urged drivers to expect significant delays, and advised them to use alternate routes. Officials later reopened the roadway.

The sheriff’s office said the Texas Department of Public Safety would lead the investigation into the fatal collision.

DPS reported that the crash occurred at about 5:25 a.m. when a pedestrian attempted to cross the interstate. Authorities have not yet identified the pedestrian.

Investigators also said the driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement.
