Peter Mullis Dies in Tragic Crash on Magnolia Avenue [Riverside, CA]

Riverside, CA (July 29, 2026) — A police pursuit in Riverside ended in tragedy Monday when a fleeing driver fatally struck 42-year-old Peter Mullis, a Kaiser Permanente employee, near the Riverside Medical Center.

The crash happened around 11:40 a.m. near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Park Sierra Drive. Riverside police had attempted to stop a driver for an alleged vehicle code violation. Although the motorist initially pulled over, he sped away as officers approached, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, the suspect struck Mullis, a radiographer in the hospital’s orthopedics department, as he walked near the medical center after returning from lunch. Emergency responders rushed Mullis into the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities identified the suspect as Gene Amos Cunningham, 62, of Riverside. Investigators arrested him the following day. He faces charges of murder and felony hit-and-run resulting in death. Police said Cunningham also had two outstanding felony warrants, was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, and has an extensive criminal record.

The collision temporarily closed Magnolia Avenue and Park Sierra Drive while investigators processed the scene.

Kaiser Permanente expressed sympathy for Mullis’ family, friends, and coworkers as they mourn his loss.
