2 People Critical After Plane Crash on El Segundo Boulevard in Hawthorne

Hawthorne, CA (September 6, 2024) – Early Friday morning, two people sustained critical injuries in a plane crash on El Segundo Boulevard.

Reportedly, a small plane crash-landed on a Hawthorne street early Friday morning, critically injuring two people on board. 

The single-engine Piper Comanche crashed and caught fire around 1 a.m. along the 4400 block of El Segundo Boulevard, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. 

Emergency crews quickly extinguished the flames.

Officials believe the plane was preparing to land at Hawthorne Airport when it crashed about a mile away. 

The pilot and passenger, believed to be the only occupants, were transported to the hospital in critical condition.

A witness, Jerald Johnson, who was nearby charging his Tesla, rushed to assist the victims. “I had just plugged in my vehicle and two minutes later, I heard a loud crash,” Johnson said. “Myself and a few others helped pull a man from the wreckage to get him away before it exploded.”

No one on the ground was injured, and no buildings were damaged. 

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
