Suspect Seriously Injured After Fleeing Traffic Stop and Crashing on Highway 40 Near Hayden
Hayden, CO (July 5, 2026) — 4 people were hurt after a frightening crash on Highway 40 on Friday morning after a driver allegedly fled a traffic stop and crashed into their vehicle.
According to authorities, a Routt County deputy attempted to stop a red Mazda 3, but the driver reportedly fled. Moments later, the Mazda collided with the front-left side of a silver Ford Explorer carrying four adults.
Emergency responders transported the Mazda driver, a Craig resident, to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The four occupants of the Ford Explorer sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene without requiring hospital transport.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, while the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office are conducting separate investigations into the attempted traffic stop and any related criminal matters.
Officials closed Highway 40 during the investigation and advised motorists to use alternate routes until the roadway reopened.
