Atascadero Woman Fatally Struck While Crossing Highway 101 On-Ramp

San Luis Obispo, CA (December 2, 2025) — 69-year-old Rachel Somars of Atascadero lost her life Monday morning after a pickup truck struck her as she crossed a Highway 101 on-ramp.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision happened around 10:20 a.m. on the southbound San Anselmo Road on-ramp.

Reports say that Hoffman was walking east along the sidewalk and was within the crosswalk when a Ford F-150 turned left onto the on-ramp and hit her. The pickup was driven by 66-year-old Gary Tipton, also from Atascadero.

Despite attempts to save her, Rachel Somars died at the scene. No passengers were inside the truck, and CHP noted that impairment did not contribute to the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
