Rebekah Burge Injured in Horrific Crash on State Highway 114 [Justin, TX]

Incoming UNT Student Critically Injured After Driver Allegedly Runs Red Light in Justin

Justin, TX (August 6, 2026) — 18-year-old Rebekah Burge, preparing to begin college at the University of North Texas, remains in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash in Justin.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened around 10 p.m. on August 2 at the intersection of State Highway 114 and Winding Meadows Drive.

Investigators said 26-year-old Maleyna Sotelo drove westbound on SH 114, failed to stop at a red light, and crashed into the driver’s side of a Mazda driven by Burge, who was traveling south on Winding Meadows Drive.

Emergency crews transported Burge to Baylor Grapevine Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She underwent emergency surgery and remains in the intensive care unit.

Sotelo and two juvenile passengers, ages 16 and 7, sustained minor injuries and were also taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Authorities cited Sotelo for disregarding a traffic signal and driving without a valid driver’s license. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Burge had been preparing to move into the University of North Texas, where she planned to begin an EMT program before the crash disrupted her plans.

Let’s Drive Safer Together

High-speed crashes can occur in the blink of an eye, but so many are preventable with small, intelligent decisions. Pay attention, don’t get distracted (say, by texting) , and never drive after drinking. As ever – obey speed limits, buckle up and keep plenty of room between yourself and other vehicles. These are small enough measures to save lives — including your own.

We can all take steps to help keep our roads safe for ourselves, our families and our communities.

Running a red light can have life-changing consequences for everyone on the road. Drivers should always obey traffic signals and remain alert at intersections to help prevent serious collisions. If you or a loved one has been injured because of another driver’s negligence, understanding your legal options may help you obtain the compensation needed for medical care and recovery.

File a Personal Injury Claim in Case of Vehicle Crash

A personal injury claim following a traffic collision is a legal process that allows an injured party to seek compensation for physical, emotional, and financial harm caused by the accident. These claims arise when a driver’s negligence, recklessness, or intentional actions lead to an accident resulting in injuries.

The first step in pursuing a personal injury claim is to establish fault. This normally involves gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, traffic camera footage, and photographs of the accident scene. A skilled attorney from Sweet Lawyers can help establish who was responsible for the accident, which is indeed necessary for determining liability.

Once the fault is established, the injured party can then pursue compensation for damages, which may include but are not limited to medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering. Consequently, medical documentation and expert testimony are essential for proving the extent of the injuries and their impact on the victim’s life.

Meanwhile, it’s important to note that the statute of limitations, or the time frame within which a personal injury claim must be filed, varies by state. Meaning, if a claim is not filed within this window, the victim and the family of the victim may lose the right to seek compensation.

A personal injury claim in the case of a traffic collision can be complex, but it offers an essential avenue that helps the victims to recover damages and hold negligent drivers accountable.
