Rancho Penasquitos Man Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries After School Bus Collision in Rancho Penasquitos

Rancho Penasquitos, TX (March 11, 2026) — 69-year-old Rene Steiner remains in critical condition after a school bus struck him while he was walking his dogs onTuesday morning.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision happened around 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Paseo Montalban and Via Cima Bella.

Investigators said a Poway Unified School District bus driven by a 76-year-old driver hit Steiner while he was crossing the street. No students were on board the bus at the time.

An officer who happened to be driving through the area came across the crash moments later and immediately began CPR after finding Steiner unconscious. Paramedics soon arrived and transported him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

Doctors reported that Steiner suffered severe injuries, including a skull fracture, a subdural hematoma, multiple broken ribs, and lung injuries. His condition was described as life-threatening.

Steiner’s dogs were unharmed and returned to his nearby home. Authorities confirmed the bus driver was not injured, and investigators ruled out alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash.

Police continue to examine the circumstances leading up to the collision.

Traffic accidents can happen in the blink of an eye — but their effects can last a lifetime. Every time you get behind the wheel, remember: staying alert and making safe choices can save lives. Avoid distractions, never drive under the influence, and always wear your seatbelt. Follow speed limits, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch out for pedestrians and cyclists who share the road with you.

Take that extra moment to look both ways and yield cautiously at intersections — sometimes, that one second of attention can prevent a serious or even life-threatening crash.

Pedestrian accidents can lead to devastating, life-threatening injuries in seconds. Drivers must remain vigilant, especially in residential areas and intersections where pedestrians may be present. Staying attentive and yielding to pedestrians can help prevent tragic incidents like this.
