3 People Hurt in Deadly Crash Near Loop 335 East in Amarillo

Amarillo, TX (August 6, 2026) — A multi-vehicle crash near Loop 335 East and Lakeside Drive in Amarillo claimed the life of 67-year-old Richard Hayes and left three others injured early Tuesday morning.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers responded to the scene around 6:20 a.m. after a major collision involving five vehicles and three pedestrians.

Investigators said the incident began when a Chevrolet pickup towing a trailer turned south onto Lakeside Drive and collided with a northbound pickup. After the initial impact, the occupants of both vehicles got out and stood on the roadway.

A northbound Toyota SUV successfully avoided the crash. However, a Jeep SUV swerved to avoid the wreck and was struck from behind by a Mitsubishi SUV. The force of the collision pushed the Jeep into the three pedestrians standing outside their vehicles. The Jeep and Mitsubishi then crashed into the rear of the Toyota SUV.

Emergency responders transported Hayes to a local hospital with critical injuries, where he later died. Authorities notified his family of his passing.

The other two pedestrians and the Jeep driver also suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
