Cortez Man Killed in Suspected DUI Head-On Crash on U.S. 491 Near Shiprock

Shiprock, NM (December 25, 2025) — A suspected drunk-driving collision on Highway 491 near Shiprock claimed the life of Richard Morales of Cortez Monday afternoon, leading to the arrest of 49-yeaqr-old Casey Wade Russell, of Gilbert.

According to authorities, Russell drove a GMC pickup northbound near milepost 95 around 4:56 p.m. while attempting to pass a commercial vehicle.

Authorities determined the pickup crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Hyundai Veloster head-on. The collision killed Morales, the Veloster’s driver.

Morales worked as a nursing supervisor at Northern Navajo Medical Center and was traveling home at the time of the crash. A commercial truck driver at the scene provided video evidence to state police investigators.

Russell received treatment at Northern Navajo Medical Center, where officers observed signs of impairment. After initially denying he was driving, investigators said Russell later admitted he was the sole occupant of the pickup. He consented to a blood draw as part of the investigation.

Authorities booked Russell into the San Juan County Detention Center and charged him with second-degree felony homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. A magistrate later released him on his own recognizance and scheduled a preliminary hearing.
