Santa Fe, NM (March 8, 2026) — 43-year-old Robert Duran and 62-year-old Frank Lovato lost their lives after a devastating multi-vehicle crash during a police pursuit in Santa Fe.

Authorities identified the victims as Duran, a Santa Fe police officer from Rio Rancho, and Lovato, a retired firefighter from Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Reports say that the incident began late Wednesday morning when law enforcement pursued a Chevrolet Malibu connected to a reported carjacking and kidnapping. During the chase, the vehicle traveled the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Interstate 25. The pursuit ended when the Malibu crashed, triggering a five-vehicle collision involving two police units, a pickup truck, and another passenger vehicle.

The violent crash caused fatal injuries to Officer Duran and Lovato. Another driver involved in the incident sustained injuries but survived.

Investigators later determined that the driver of the Malibu was Jeannine Jaramillo, a 46-year-old Albuquerque resident. Authorities say she falsely claimed she had been kidnapped after the crash. Evidence from the vehicle and the investigation led troopers to identify her as the driver. Officers arrested Jaramillo days later and booked her into the Santa Fe County Adult Detention Center on several charges, including first-degree murder by vehicle.
