Fiery Rollover Crash on Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway

2 Dead in Tempe Auto Accident on Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway and Loop 101

TEMPE, AZ (July 7, 2026) – Sunday night, a fiery rollover crash on Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway and Loop 101 interchange killed 2 people.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway at the Loop 101 interchange.

Two people were killed in a crash on Loop 202 after a vehicle merging into the high-occupancy vehicle lane rear-ended another vehicle, investigators said.

Authorities said the second vehicle was stopped or moving slowly in the HOV lane when it was struck. The impact pushed the vehicle into the median wall, where it rolled onto its roof and caught fire. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the fire initially blocked the HOV and westbound lanes near McClintock Drive before the freeway was fully closed. Dark smoke also reduced visibility on the eastbound side of Loop 202.

The at-fault driver was not identified. Authorities said the victims’ identities are being withheld while next of kin are notified.

The westbound freeway remained closed for several hours before reopening around 10 p.m. The crash remains under investigation.
