Motorcyclist Killed, Another Seriously Hurt in Highway 550 Crash Near Silverton

Silverton, CO (August 4, 2026) — A two-motorcycle collision south of Silverton claimed one life and seriously injured 73-year-old Roy Selensk on July 31.

The crash happened around 1:49 p.m. on Highway 550 near milepost 54 in San Juan County. According to the Colorado State Patrol, a red Harley-Davidson traveling south crossed near the centerline and partially entered the northbound lane, where it collided with a black Harley-Davidson traveling north.

The impact forced the black motorcycle off the roadway, sending it airborne before it struck a ridge and ejected its rider. The motorcycle continued rolling down the hillside, while the red Harley slid onto the northbound shoulder.

Authorities identified the deceased rider as a 53-year-old man from Farmington, New Mexico, who died at the scene. The other rider, Selensk of Baytown, Texas, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Investigators later charged Selensk with careless driving causing death. The Colorado State Patrol’s Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate the fatal collision.
