Sandra Elliott Killed in Multi-Car Crash on Highway 550 [Durango, CO]

Durango, CO (July 23, 2026) — 79-year-old Sandra Elliott of Durango lost her life following a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango early Saturday morning.

The Colorado State Patrol said the collision happened around 4:45 a.m. near mile marker 26 when a southbound Nissan Murano crossed the center line and struck a northbound Ford Flex driven by Sandra “Sandy” Elliott head-on. The impact forced the Ford off the roadway into a ditch before the Nissan collided with a Toyota Tacoma traveling behind Elliott. The Nissan then rolled over and came to rest in the southbound lane.

Emergency crews airlifted Elliott to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, where she later died from her injuries.

Authorities said Elliott’s passenger, 76-year-old Thomas “Steve” Bettis, suffered critical injuries and remained hospitalized. The 18-year-old driver of the Nissan also sustained serious injuries, while the 26-year-old driver of the Toyota Tacoma was not hurt.

Investigators continue to examine the cause of the crash, including whether impairment played a role.

Elliott, a retired certified public accountant and longtime Durango resident, is survived by her three children and four grandchildren. She was remembered for her active lifestyle, dedication to her community, and love of golf, quilting, and travel.
