Devon Schinagel Arrested after Fatal Vehicle Crash on North Main Street [Roswell, NM]

Woman Killed in a Deadly Roswell Auto Accident on North Main Street and Fifth Street

ROSWELL, NM (September 16, 2026) – Wednesday afternoon, Devon Schinagel was arrested after a fatal vehicle crash on North Main Street.

The incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on North Main Street and Fifth Street.

A preliminary investigation found that Devon Schinagel of Elephant Butte was driving a 2026 Ford Maverick south on Main Street at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light. The pickup then collided with a 2016 Ford Edge traveling west on Fifth Street.

Schinagel attempted to leave the scene on foot but was found and detained by responding officers about a block away, police said.

Louis Madero, 61, and his wife, Sandra Madero, 61, were taken to a hospital. Sandra Madero was pronounced dead, while Louis remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon. Schinagel was also taken to a hospital for treatment and was later released and arrested.

Schinagel is charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, and multiple other traffic violations.
